It come from the Latin word for item Ituminus translated into Anglo Saxon it can mean Item or thing

Et Tinghus, A Thing House, is a kind of court house, also where you might have civil marriages.

Put the "et" on the end, Tinghuset, and it become The Thing House.


Their version of the House of Commons is called Stortinget, which translates as The Big Thing.

So a thing is something Viking, no doubt.
